Deadline can unveil a first-look trailer for rising Japanese director Masaaki Kudo’s new feature A Far Shore ahead of its world premiere

The timely contemporary tale taps into themes of gender inequality and female empowerment through an intimate
portrait of a young woman battling to keep her head above water against the odds.
Set against the backdrop of the Japanese island of Okinawa, it follows a 17-year-old high school dropout and young mother who works as a hostess in the city’s
sleazy nightclub scene to keep her family afloat, getting little support from her jobless and violent husband.
“There is nobody around her to help. She has the desire to escape and find a place to live peacefully,”
Kudo says in his director’s statement. “This movie is dedicated to my mother and grandmother who raised me in an era of violence and intense discrimination against women.”
A Far Shore marks the third feature for Kudo who previously worked as an assistant director for filmmakers such as Sion Sono and Isao Yukisada.
It follows 2021 film Unprecedented, which also tapped into the impact of financial insecurity on Japanese youngsters, and the 2018 Netpac Award winner I’m Crazy.
